Join Insights North East for this masterclass exploring a range of aspects of local and regional development running over Winter 22-23. Each session will run for 1½ hours and will introduce a different topic with expert speakers from the worlds of research, policy and practice. As well as presentations from speakers here will be opportunities for questions and discussion. Participants can join us in person or online for these hybrid events.

This session will cover sub-national financing – who gets what and what are the implications of the current local government funding crisis for local and combined authorities in the North East. It will also look at how investment decisions are made and appraised, looking at Treasury orthodox methods such as the ‘Green Book’. It will then consider some alternative approaches to investment appraisal such as social return on investment and discuss whether these are likely to impact on the status quo in future.

Featured speakers for session 3:

  • Andy Pike (Newcastle University)
  • Suzanne Nestor-Robson (Newcastle University)
  • Alex Gardiner/Sarah Thompson (Metro Dynamics)
  • David Marlow (Third Life Economics)
