The North East is at the forefront of the UK’s offshore wind industry, with around 550 renewable energy companies employing an estimated 17,000 people. As home to the most advanced offshore wind cluster in the country, the region could account for one-fifth of the UK’s offshore wind economy. Notably, 9% of the UK’s offshore wind businesses are based in the North East.
With a goal to expand the regional offshore wind workforce to 24,000 by 2025, the North East faces challenges related to: research, development, and deployment of innovation; skills development; supply chains; financing; and minimising environmental impact.
