Policy Briefing, September 2024

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is an educational approach that teaches children to manage emotions, set goals, show empathy, build positive relationships, and make sound decisions. Integrating SEL into curricula can build on the region’s strong primary school performance, potentially improving secondary school results and student wellbeing.
Innovative programmes like STAR and My Story, My Place, My Future demonstrate effective SEL integration with creative arts and literacy. Implementing SEL could positively impact academic achievement, mental health, school engagement, long-term economic prospects, and teacher wellbeing in the North East.
