This report by Urban Foresight was commissioned by Insights North East to investigate workforce planning, job creation, and skills needs in the green sector for the next five years.

A number of projects have carried out previous research into the demand for skills in the green sector in the region. The research is often small-scale and not shared with partners in the region. This report therefore aims to join up this research to present an overall picture of the North East’s
green economy.

Therefore, to build on prior qualitative research, this report conducts a meta-analysis of existing literature which can be found in Appendix 1. The report also examines the results of a regional business survey to both sense-check and validate the findings and estimates of previous research.

This will give a detailed picture of the current and future demand for skilled employees across the different aspects of the green economy. This also provides solid evidence on which to develop future regional economic, educational, and development policies.
